E-cigarettes are much better for you than traditional smokes, but there are still some electronic cigarette health risks that you should be aware of. People were not originally aware of the inherent health risks of traditional cigarettes, many until it was too late, and some damage had already been done.
E-cigs are used as a valuable alternative to traditional cigarettes. Heat produces a vapor instead of smoke, which is why many people call themselves vapors and not smokers. The atomizer on an e-cig senses air flow, so when you take a drag, the e-cig gives you nicotine vapor (or nicotine-free vapor, if that’s the type of cartridge you’re using).
Health experts say that conventional cigarettes contain a huge number of chemicals that may be harmful to the human body. Nicotine is considered a psychoactive chemical, but other elements are carcinogenic. This is why e-cigs are so popular, since they avoid these chemicals, except for nicotine.
E-cigarettes give you the sensation and flavor of smoking without the smoke. Some states are banning e-cigs in non-smoking places, while in other areas, you can use them. The Food & Drug Administration in the United States has not conducted many studies about e-cig safety, but samples checked by administration officials did have quality issues, and concerns about electronic cigarette health risks.
In some e-cigarettes collected, the nicotine levels were high, and in some of the supposedly nicotine-free brands, they found trace amounts of nicotine. Some smokeless cigarettes were found to have nitrosamines from tobacco. These are carcinogenic. One sample contained diethylene glycol, a toxic substance.
The FDA is also concerned that younger children will start with e-cigarettes and then move on to traditional cigarettes at an earlier age. If they use e-cigs with nicotine, the craving will be there. The World Health Organization, known as WHO, would like to conduct clinical studies to prove just how safe e-cigarettes are. There is not enough regulation in the field, they argue, and they need to have safety systems implemented.
Sometimes e-cigs have leaky cartridges, and people may dispose of cartridges that are not fully empty. This can cause a problem if someone else finds the cartridges and uses them. Certainly, e-cigarettes are safer than conventional cigarettes, but they may not be as safe as buyers have been led to believe.
Health Canada has determined that e-cigarettes may cause nicotine poisoning, if they are used over a long period of time. Long term use can also constrict arteries, which makes it more difficult for your heart to supply blood efficiently to your body. Other problems following long-term nicotine use include heart disease and high blood pressure. You may also be more prone to peptic ulcers and GERD.
There aren’t conclusive studies to prove that e-cigarettes are dangerous, and they are certainly much safer than smoking traditional cigarettes would be. Don’t take up “vaping” if you are not a smoker. But if you are trying to quit smoking, the benefits of e-cigs may outweigh the electronic cigarette health risks.
